AskElephant Bot Not Responding in Slack Channels

Introduction

If @askelephant isn't responding to queries in a Slack channel, it's usually one of two things: the bot isn't in the channel or the user triggering it isn't licensed.

Check the Bot Is in the Channel

Make sure the AskElephant app has been added to the channel:

  1. Open the channel where the bot isn't responding.

  2. Click the channel name at the top of the conversation.

  3. Open the Integrations tab.

  4. Look for AskElephant in the list of installed apps. If it isn't there, click Add an app and add it.

Bot not in channel is the single most common cause of silence.

Check the User's License

The user triggering the bot needs an active AskElephant license. Users without one can see the channel and type the query, but the bot won't respond.

If you're not sure who's licensed, a workspace admin can check in your workspace settings.

Test with a Known Working User

If the bot responds for some people but not others in the same channel, have someone who's used it successfully re-run the same query. This tells you whether the problem is user-specific (licensing, permissions) or channel-wide (bot not installed).

If None of the Above Works

Contact support with:

  • The channel name where the issue happens.

  • The email of the user experiencing the problem.

  • The exact query that was sent.

  • A screenshot showing the bot didn't respond.

That's enough for us to trace what happened on our side.
